What is humana dental insurance?

Humana dental insurance

You go at least once a year to the dentist because it is essential to have a neat dentition. Typically, each Belgian household is affiliated with a Dental insurance company, and the compulsory health insurance reimburses part of the visits and dental care. Unfortunately, there is also care for which the intervention is very limited/non-existent. It is therefore recommended to have mutual humana dental insurance to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

What is humana dental insurance?

Humana dental insurance is insurance that you and your family can take out as a supplement to your health insurance. As mentioned before, the law stipulates that in Belgium, everyone must have health insurance with a mutual insurance company of choice, but this legal health insurance does not cover all treatments and proposes only a limited intervention (about 57 % – figures for dentistry 2012). To avoid having to pay a large sum unexpectedly, you have every interest in taking out additional humana dental insurance.

Some examples of oral care for which you have only limited intervention or none from the compulsory health insurance.

Example 1: At the annual checkup, your dentist finds that one of your molars is in bad shape. The first solution proposed to you is a root canal treatment, for which health insurance only partially intervenes.

After a while, it turns out that your tooth is still not better … You have pain because of the inflammation, so the only solution is to tear your teeth as soon as possible! In this case, the compulsory health insurance does not provide for any intervention.

either. The bill can then be salty, it is here about a few hundred to a thousand euros.

Example 2 : Your son or daughter needs a device. Whether the orthodontist opts for a night device or platelets, the two treatments are not given and can go up to several thousand euros. Since your mutual offers only limited intervention, you will still have a nice sum to pay, unless you have taken out

If you then choose to replace this tooth with a dental prosthesis such as an implant, a bridge or a crown, the mutual will not intervene

either. The bill can then be salty, it is here about a few hundred to a thousand euros.

When can you use it and what covers does it offer?

You can use the humana dental insurance for all dental care for which your compulsory health insurance only partially or not at all. Regardless of the company from which you purchase your complementary humana dental insurance, the following treatments are covered (after or without the intervention of compulsory health insurance):

  • Conservative care. This category includes a visit to the dentist during which he removes tartar (or dental plaque), treats cavities, performs a root canal treatment (= devitalize your tooth) or tears your tooth in the worst case.
  • Dental prostheses (prosthetic restoration). These include the following prostheses, replacing your tooth (s): an implant, a bridge, a crown …
  • Periodontal treatments. These are specialized treatments for the gums, the jaw, the support tissue of the teeth, the teeth that come loose, …
  • Orthodontics (appliances, platelets, …) for children and adults. This treatment can cost you the eyes of the head and for the adults, no intervention is envisaged whereas they also have right to have teeth very straight!
